Letter to BFME Community
By Forlong - 12th December 2010 - 19:43 PM
Almost two weeks ago, EA announced that it would be shutting down the online servers for Battle for Middle-earth series games at the end of December. The past two weeks have been a confusing time for the Middle-earth community. Many players have given up on the series altogether, and are planning to quit playing once the servers shut down on January 1. Others aren't willing to give up so soon, and are seeking alternative ways to continue playing online. GameReplays is here to support this second group of players. We want the Battle for Middle-earth to continue just as much as you do, and we're hard at work making sure this occurs.
It is of utmost importance for us, as a community, to stand united in the face of the upcoming server shutdown. Each Battle for Middle-earth game still has a strong enough community to remain a great, active game, even without official servers. But this can only happen if we all stick together. As such, GameReplays has spent the past two weeks working on a unified response to the server shutdown. Most importantly, that means deciding on one, and only one, way to continue playing The Battle for Middle-earth multiplayer. However, there's a lot that goes into this. It's taken time to decide for sure how we're going to keep playing online, since we needed to be sure that we were making the best possible choice for the future of our community. Now, it's going to take us more time to present this solution to you, the community, in the most effective way possible. We're hard at work on everything that goes into this, but it's not going to happen overnight.
Just as staying unified after the server shutdown is important, so is remaining united in advance of it. Recently, many players have abandoned EA's servers in preparation for the shutdown, and have independently started using programs like GameRanger, Tunngle, and Hamachi to play online. This is bad. By switching early, in advance of our unified plan, we're setting the groundwork for a divided community after the servers shut down, which is the last thing we want. That's why we want everyone to stick to EA's official servers for the time being.
GameReplays's promise to the community is this: we'll present a strong, unified response to the server shutdown, and do so well in advance of the date of the shutdown. That date is still three weeks away. There's still time, so we're not going to be hasty and careless about this. We'd like everyone to stick with the official EA servers until they close down. Keep checking GameReplays for more updates on the situation.
In the meantime, I'd like to thank everyone for sticking with GameReplays over the years. It's our strong community that's made GameReplays the number one site for the Battle for Middle-earth series. We're not going to let a silly little server shutdown change that. The host may have left the game, but the Battle for Middle-earth will continue!
Sincerely,
Forlong
